Jazz Theory Masterclass
A practical, small-group masterclass led by Dr. Beau Cornelius that turns “chords and scales” into real musical fluency. You’ll learn to read and think in chord symbols and numbers (I–vi–ii–V), hear guide-tones, build shell and four-note voicings, and understand functional harmony, modes, secondary dominants, tritone subs (light touch), and minor ii–V–i progressions. We’ll map common forms (12-bar blues, Rhythm Changes, AABA), analyze standards, and connect theory to the keyboard or your primary instrument so you can comp, create bass lines, and choose colors that fit the moment. Each session includes ear-training, quick analysis “hot seats,” and immediate application with play-along excerpts. You’ll receive concise PDFs, annotated lead sheets, listening lists, and a weekly practice plan. Ideal for pianists, instrumentalists, and vocalists who want clear frameworks, not jargon—no theory degree required, just curiosity and a willingness to practice.

Jazz Improvisation Masterclass
Build a personal soloing voice with a step-by-step process you can use on any tune. Guided by Dr. Beau Cornelius, this masterclass starts with melody-first improvisation and motivic development, then adds chord-tone targeting, voice-leading through ii–V–I, approach notes/enclosures (tastefully), blues language, and time feel that actually swings. You’ll learn how to structure choruses, use space, shape phrases, and create call-and-response; rhythm studies cover off-beat placement, triplet cells, and trading 4s/8s. We’ll apply the method to core repertoire (blues, Rhythm Changes, and a few jam-session standards), with live demonstration, guided play-alongs, and constructive feedback. Pianists/guitarists also get comping strategies; horn players and vocalists get articulation and lyric phrasing tips. Expect weekly backing tracks, lick-to-language drills, and short transcription “micro-studies” to internalize feel. Finish with a capstone performance plan and a toolkit to keep improving long after the class ends.
